Sir Gavin Williamson visited Yarlet School – a leading day and flexi-boarding school for pupils aged between two and thirteen years old.
Sir Gavin was given a tour of the school and grounds by Head Girl and Head Boy Cora and Logan. Following this, Sir Gavin witnessed the choir performing a harmonised version of ‘you raise me up.’ He then answered a range of questions from various age groups, and also visited several classrooms to speak to pupils and teachers.
Sir Gavin also met with the Headteacher Mr Raybould to discuss the Government’s planned removal of VAT exemptions on private school fees, which could severely impact families of children with special needs and create additional pressure on state education.
Sir Gavin said: "I thoroughly enjoyed visiting Yarlet School which is located in stunning grounds and provides tailored support so pupils can thrive. It was a pleasure to hear a wonderful performance from the choir and answer a range of interesting questions from pupils.
“I also welcomed the opportunity to discuss the impact of VAT on private school fees with the Headteacher, and will be taking forward concerns and engaging with Ministers as well as the wider sector.”
Headteacher, Mr Raybould said: “We were delighted to welcome Sir Gavin to Yarlet School on Friday. Our pupils asked some fantastic questions and it was wonderful to see their enthusiasm for learning about leadership and public service. A huge thank you to Sir Gavin for taking the time to visit us and making this a truly memorable occasion!”
