Sir Gavin Williamson attended a fundraising event at Amerton Meadows on Saturday, where local farmer Nick Greaves set a world record for sheep shearing.
Sir Gavin joined locals to celebrate Nick’s sheep shearing skills, which saw him successfully achieve a world record, completely shearing 764 wool lambs in eight hours. This saw him smash the record of 754 set by New Zealander Jack Fagan in December 2022. The title has been almost exclusively held by New Zealanders for the past 50 years.
At the same time, Nick raised over £5,600 for Cancer Research UK, a charity that holds a special significance for his family.
Nick is a sheep shearing contractor and farms in partnership with his parents in Staffordshire. Together they farm 1,350 ewes, 500 ewe lambs and 150 cattle.
Sir Gavin said: ‘It was amazing to see Nick set a world record, demonstrating his shearing skills and making his family and the local community very proud. Over £5,600 was raised through a raffle and auction during the day, and Nick has also set up an online fundraiser where you can continue donating.’
