Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, recently paid a visit to the Great Wyrley Local History Society.
During the coffee morning, Gavin said a few words on the importance of the local history society’s role in remembering not just the distant, but also the recent, past.
He referenced the passing of the Olympic torch, last year, as an example of an event that was worthy of being chronicled for generations to come.
Gavin also listened to a presentation by Mr. Andrew George of the Lichfield Record Office, who brought with him local maps and wills from circa 1720.
On the event, Gavin said: “I had a wonderful morning and greatly enjoyed meeting both the Local History Society members and Mr. George of the Lichfield Record Office. It was fascinating to learn some new facts about my constituency.
“I believe the Great Wyrley Local History Society and other organisations like it play a hugely significant role in helping to preserve the fabric of our social history. I can only imagine what member’s will be learning about us in a century’s time.”
Pam Ball, Vice-Chairman of the Society, added: “It was an especially pleasing and informative session that was thoroughly enjoyed by the full house of members that attended. Both speakers commented upon the friendly welcome and gave valuable insights into more aspects of our heritage.”
