Sir Gavin Williamson visited Wheaton Aston Cricket Club to learn more about how the club is getting young people involved in sport.
Sir Gavin met with Greg Lawley, Junior Organiser at Wheaton Aston Cricket Club, to discuss the club’s junior cricket team. In particular, they spoke about the need for new facilities at the club, including an artificial wicket and nets. Following the meeting, Sir Gavin agreed to write to the English Cricket Board to help the club access funding for a new net.
It is the first time in twenty years that the club is running junior cricket, and the club aims to enter a team into the Staffordshire under 9’s tournament. In addition to organising junior cricket, Greg Lawley also runs a local junior football team for under 7s, under 8s and under 10s.
Greg Lawley said: “It was great to meet with Sir Gavin and we appreciate his time and input into assisting us with the development of our facilities. Junior sport is critical to the health and wellbeing of both our children and local community therefore to have the support of our local MP to achieve our goals is fantastic.”
Sir Gavin said: “It was fantastic to visit Wheaton Aston Cricket Club and see how hard they are working to get young people up and moving. The Club brings so much to the local community and I hope that they will be able to access the funding they need in order to thrive.”
