Sir Gavin Williamson attended a parliamentary event with Guide Dogs to support the charity’s proposals for the next year, and to spread awareness of its successful campaigns in 2023.
Sir Gavin met with representatives from Guide Dogs UK to discuss how the charity had been able to take significant steps this year towards improving facilities and accessibility for the blind. Sir Gavin was keen to support the accomplishments of the year, involving such campaigns as a reversal on plans to close railway ticket offices in England, an important feature for those with little to no sight. As an advocate for Guide Dogs UK, Sir Gavin was eager to champion the charity’s 2024 campaign to tackle anti-social e-scooter use and to enforce clearer laws on pavement parking across the UK. These measures would make significant headway towards improving the safety for blind and partially sighted people in the UK.
Sir Gavin said: “I was glad to meet with Guide Dogs UK to discuss their objectives for the next year and talk about what I can do as an MP to help push for legislation that will make life easier for guide dog owners. The reckless use of e-scooters is an issue that I’m already keen to discuss with local authorities, and I’m hopeful that I can support the work of Guide Dogs UK and the blind in Staffordshire.”
A spokesperson from Guide Dogs UK said: “I am absolutely delighted that the decision has been reached to keep station ticket offices open. These are a vital service for blind and partially sighted people, as not everyone can use an app or a machine. Also, they are a great place for seeking assistance, particularly in unfamiliar sections.”
