Sir Gavin Williamson has lent his support to the charity Alzheimer’s Research UK as it embarks upon pioneering drug trials for dementia patients.
Sir Gavin recently visited an Alzheimer’s Research UK event at the Houses of Parliament to show his support for those living with dementia, and to campaign for Alzheimer’s Research to be prioritised in the next Conservative manifesto. The event was well-attended by MPs who have collaborated on a petition to the government, calling for support to be given for the ground-breaking research, which could change the lives of millions.
Sir Gavin was especially keen to attend and contribute to the petition due to its importance to South Staffordshire residents. There are 1,547 people living with a recorded diagnosis of dementia in this constituency, and proposed medications to prevent and treat the condition could be transformative for so many. The letter addressed to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak which Sir Gavin encouraged others to sign, appeals to the PM to meet with Alzheimer’s Research UK, to discuss what measures the party can put in place ahead of the next general election, to ensure that the work of Alzheimer’s Research UK is supported as best as possible.
Sir Gavin said: ‘It was a great pleasure to meet with the leaders of dementia research in parliament this week. Their work is truly invaluable and has such potential to limit the extent of such a cruel disease. I will do everything I can to support the work of this organisation and the families of South Staffordshire who rely on its research.’
