Sir Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, has welcomed Government plans to ban fees for disposing DIY waste at council recycling centres in a move to tackle fly-tipping.
Since 2015, charges on residents disposing of household rubbish at household waste centres have been banned by the Government.
However, several local authorities — including Staffordshire County Council — still charge for the disposal of certain types of DIY material by applying rules to residents designed for construction waste.
Sir Gavin has been against these charges for several years and has campaigned against them alongside local residents in South Staffordshire.
The Government is holding an open consultation on their plans to ban these fees which closes on the 4th July. The consultation can be found here.
Sir Gavin Williamson said: “Many constituents and I have been deeply against these charges for years and I am thrilled to see the Government listening and taking action to scrap these unnecessary fees.
“We do not need to wait for the law to be changed, however, as Staffordshire County Council have the power to remove these harmful charges at any time. As such, I have written to the county council asking them to do the right thing and remove these charges immediately to help combat fly-tipping in Staffordshire.”
