Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, welcomed pupils from Westfield Primary School to Parliament this week.
The pupils, from the Wombourne based primary school, were accompanied by School Governor Councillor Barry Bond. They began their visit with a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster which included the House of Commons and the House of Lords
Their tour was followed by a question and answer session with Gavin who answered questions on a variety of topics including how he became an MP, his role as Chief Whip and meeting the Queen. Pupils also asked about local issues including speeding in their village and the role of the Community Speedwatch.
The pupils have recently designed play equipment for the School. Their designs have been sent to the Parish Council who will feedback their opinions to the students about their plans.
Students are currently covering democracy as part of their syllabus and will be working with Councillor Bond and using their experience at Westminster and their time spent at the Council Chamber in Wombourne as part of their studies.
After meeting pupils Gavin said: “It was wonderful to welcome pupils and teachers from Westfield Primary School to Parliament this week. I really enjoyed meeting the students and answering all of their questions. It’s great to hear that they’re getting so much practical experience to learn about how the democratic system works both locally in Wombourne and in Westminster.
“It’s very important that everyone has the opportunity to quiz and question their MP, and I was very pleased to be able to provide them with the chance to do this in Parliament. I was extremely impressed by some of the intelligent questions that were asked by pupils. I look forward to hearing about the progress of their designs for the playground and hopefully visiting it when it has been completed.”
