Sir Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, recently visited the Forest of Mercia to discuss their ‘Trees for Climate’ initiative.
The Forest of Mercia is a community forest which helps plant trees and provide environmental education in Staffordshire and the West Midlands.
Sir Gavin toured the Forest of Mercia’s Hilton Green with its Directors, Dave Knowles and Kathryn Lane, and discussed their ‘Trees for Climate’ initiative which can fund private and public landowners to plant trees to fix carbon to help with climate change.
The scheme supports a wide variety of tree planting including hedges with standards and also other biodiversity improvements such as wildflower meadows and ponds. It can also fund street trees and look at creating avenues on the main streets in towns and villages.
Dave and Kathryn said: “It was great to have an opportunity to meet with Sir Gavin and discuss the Forest of Mercia CIC project. We discussed opportunities for tree planting in South Staffordshire as part of the national ‘Trees for Climate’ planting scheme, which can fund tree planting, materials, and maintenance.”
Sir Gavin said: “It was a pleasure to visit the Forest of Mercia and discuss their tree planting initiatives for South Staffordshire. Their programmes both help combat climate change and provide beautiful areas for us all to live in, and I would encourage businesses and local communities to look into these schemes further.”
