Thirteen Sixth Form students from Ounsdale High School, in Wombourne, paid a visit to Gavin Williamson MP for South Staffordshire, on Monday.
The group was given a talk by Gavin on his duties as a MP, before being escorted by him on a tour of Parliament.
As part of the talk, they were given the opportunity to ask questions about Gavin’s job and his views on a number of current issues.
Gavin was extremely impressed by the students’ questions, which covered subjects ranging from MPs’ balance of responsibilities to Nadine Dorris’ stint in the jungle and the relevance of Prime Minister’s Question Time.
On the visit, Gavin said: “I was really impressed by the quality of the questions and the obvious depth of knowledge that the students had. It’s very important that everyone has the opportunity to quiz and question their MP, and I was very pleased to be able to provide them with the chance to do this in Parliament.
“I hope that in some small way their understanding of what an MP does in both Parliament and their constituency is enhanced, and that they may one day be tempted to be involved in politics themselves.”
Ounsdale High School teacher Ashley Wetherhogg added: “I cannot thank Gavin enough for giving up his valuable time to aid the education of our Politics students. Not only has Gavin helped to develop the students’ understanding of the role of an MP and the workings of Parliament, he has also helped to improve the image of politicians amongst young people.
"Before the trip they had a negative perception of politicians; they left raving about how they had the nicest MP who really cared for their area. His enthusiasm, passion and honesty were appreciated by them all and I cannot thank him enough.”
