Gavin Williamson, MP for South Stafforshire, has received a £20,000 pledge from Severn Trent to reduce odours at its site in Coven Heath.
Gavin met with Severn Trent, last Friday, following another spillage at the facility.
The incident led to the temporary closure of Ball Lane whilst contractors worked to clean up the mess.
The Severn Trent site currently caters for sewage coming from HMP Oakwood and there have been reports that the sewage from the new i54 business park will also be sent to the facility.
Local residents have raised concerns that the tanks are not being properly maintained, stating that a similar incident occurred on Christmas Eve. There are also fears over the site’s capacity.
At the time, the company offered its apologies and claimed it was looking into a solution.
During the meeting with Gavin, operatives explained what actions had already been taken at the site and expressed their willingness to look at other means of avoiding any further such incidents.
They also indicated that the company would be investing £20,000 on covers for the tanks to reduce odours.
Furthermore, moves are being taken to ensure that, should another spillage occur, it would not spread to public land. Engineers are also undertaking regular checks on the tanks.
Gavin said: “I’m very pleased that that Severn Trent has taken mine and my constituents concerns so seriously, and is already taking action to address the problem.
“The sewage spill that occurred should never have happened and I am very glad that Severn Trent is looking at the possibility of putting in place further measures to make sure, if something of this nature occurs again, any spillage would be contained in the Severn Trent site.”
