Sir Gavin Williamson paid a visit to Penkridge Middle School alongside the Children’s Commissioner.
Sir Gavin joined Dame Rachel de Souza, the Children’s Commissioner, on a tour of Penkridge Middle School. During the visit, they took questions from the school’s Student Council, discussing issues such as climate change and the need for schools to be more eco-friendly. They also attended a girls’ football session, organised to mark International Women’s Day and increase girls’ participation in sport.
Almost 500 pupils attend Penkridge Middle School, and it is led by headteacher Andrew Grocutt. The school prides itself on the broad and balanced education it offers to students, which includes a wide range of subjects and extracurricular activities.
Mr Grocutt said: “We were delighted to welcome Sir Gavin and Dame Rachel to Penkridge Middle School on Friday 8th March. It was great to be able to show them both the work we do at the school and how our niche setting has clear strengths for their educational experiences.”
“It was great to show them the work we were doing with girls’ football, our parent-funded library, and CCE talks to older pupils. Our student leaders were fascinated to learn about what being an MP is all about and were keen to share their hopes and dreams for the future. We really appreciated the visit and look forward to welcoming them again in the future.”
Sir Gavin said: “It was fantastic to join the Children’s Commissioner on a visit to Penkridge Middle School and to show her the high standards of education on offer to children in Staffordshire. It was fantastic to meet both students and teachers, and I applaud them for their hard work in creating such a vibrant and thriving school community”.
