Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, visited West Midlands Hedgehog Rescue this weekend to learn how they care for vulnerable hedgehogs.
Gavin met with Joan Lockley, who works for the charity, which takes in sick, injured, orphaned and abandoned hedgehogs covering the northern half of the West Midlands and South Staffordshire. The Centre currently admits over 400 hedgehogs a year which need to be constantly observed and hand-fed throughout the summer until they are big enough to hibernate.
Gavin has previously visited the sanctuary on their annual Open Day which raises money for to support the charity until they can be released back into their natural habitat. The charity is totally dependent on donations and money raised from their Open Days. They are currently looking for donations of cat food to feed those hedgehogs that are taken care of after being rescued.
Gavin said: “I greatly enjoyed visiting the West Midlands Hedgehog Rescue Open Day this weekend. The charity does wonderful work to care for sick animals in order to release them back into the wild, when they are restored to full health.
“I was surprised to learn about the large number of Joan and her team of volunteers care for. They do a fantastic job and I would encourage residents to donate any spare tins of cat food to the charity.”
