Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, visited Great Wyrley Local History Society this week to view their digitised records.
The group arranged for the burial records from Great Wyrley Cemetery to be digitised and displayed at the Community Centre in Great Wyrley and the digitised version will be presented to the Parish Council.
The digitising of the records has been a long-term project led by Darren Butler of the Cheslyn Hay Society.
Dianne Tolley, Secretary of the History Society said: “We would like to thank Gavin for attending our presentation on Wednesday, everyone present had a very pleasant evening. It was the culmination of two years’ work by Darren Butler and others to get the burial records into digital form. The existing records were very old and worn, and quite difficult to read.”
Commenting on his visit Gavin said: “I had such an interesting visit to Great Wyrley Local History Society last week to see their display of the digitised burial records from Great Wyrley Cemetery. The Society does fantastic work, promoting and preserving our local history for future generations.
“Our history still plays a very significant role in our present. Not only can we learn many extremely important lessons from our past, but it also makes up a significant part of our identity and who we are as a society.”
