Sir Gavin Williamson visited the historic St Mary and St Chad’s Church in Brewood and learned more about local efforts to protect and maintain the building.
Sir Gavin met with Church Wardens to discuss efforts to fix the Church’s roof, which is damaged and has been prone to leakages. In particular, he discussed efforts to raise funds from local businesses to protect the Grade 1 listed building.
St Mary and St Chad’s Church is an important part of Brewood’s heritage and a cornerstone of the local community. As well as services, it provides talks, concerts and fayres that cater to those of all ages and backgrounds.
Sir Gavin said: “I was grateful for the opportunity to visit St Mary and St Chad’s and discuss ways to save the building’s roof. St Mary and St Chad’s is a beautiful building around which there is a thriving community. I will continue to do all I can to help secure funding for these costly repairs and I very much hope the church will be supported.”
Ian Carless, a Church Warden, said: “The Grade 1 listed Church of St Mary & St Chad in Brewood urgently needs funding for major re-roofing work because of ingress of water which has worsened over the last 12 months, particularly when heavy rain is coupled with high winds. Apart from damage to the fabric of the Church, the electrical installations are at risk as are both congregations and visitors when the aisles become damp. “
“Many village organisations have expressed their support by recognising that a beautiful and safe Church building benefits both regular worshippers and the wider Community. The PCC and the fundraising committee are very grateful to Sir Gavin for his endorsement of the project, following his recent visit to the Church.”
