Sir Gavin Williamson recently met with several charities who have voiced their support for the new Outdoors for All manifesto, which seeks to improve access to nature in the UK.
Sir Gavin has given his support to a manifesto which hopes to encourage more people to be active and engage with rich outdoor spaces and native wildlife. He has called on the government to make their 15-minute to nature target a legally binding initiative. This is a commitment to ensure everyone lives within a 15-minute walk of an accessible green or blue space.
Currently the UK ranks the lowest of 14 European nations on nature connectedness. This has profound implications on the physical health of the population, as 1 in 6 deaths in the UK are associated with physical inactivity.
Sir Gavin said: “We must prioritise access to outdoor spaces to get Britain fit and active. As an advocate for the Green Belt, I’m in full support of policies that will protect rural areas and would like to see more funding allocated for this.”
