Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, joined volunteers from The Royal British Legion to sell poppies in Perton and Codsall at the weekend.
The volunteers began selling their poppies outside Sainsbury’s in Perton where they were aided in their efforts by members of staff from the supermarket. They then travelled to Codsall to continue raising money that goes towards the essential welfare work of Service men and women, veterans and their families.
The Royal British Legion in Staffordshire has 66 branches with 8 groups, 13 clubs and over 7,500 members around the county. The Royal British Legion in Staffordshire is the leading ex-Service organisation in the county that supports around 9 million people in the UK.
Clive Rathbone, a volunteer with The Royal British Legion said: “I would like to thank Gavin for his help on Saturday, it was a boost to the collection and I am sure many people were glad to see him.”
Gavin said: “I very much enjoyed my afternoon selling poppies with the volunteers of The Royal British Legion. Every year volunteers of the Royal British Legion, throughout South Staffordshire and across the country, really punch above their weight in terms of the amount of money that they raise for such a wonderful cause.
“I urge everyone to keep in mind those who have lost their lives fighting for our freedom during the moment of silence during the Remembrance commemorations and on Remembrance Day itself, especially during this centenary year.”
