Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, joined a group of walkers in Great Wyrley for one of their regular Health Walks around the village.
The walk began at the Methodist Church in Great Wyrley and took in many of the local sights. The group of walkers meet every Wednesday morning for a programme of 3 walks, one longer one for an hour, one 30 minute walk and a further walk aimed at dog owners.
The group also promotes the Walking for Health scheme, England’s largest network of health walk schemes, helping all kinds of people take their first steps to a more active lifestyle. The walks are led by volunteers and completely free of charge. They not only help keep people healthy, but they are great regular social event and a way to meet people and enjoy a get together.
Afterwards Gavin joined the walkers for a Macmillan Coffee Morning raising money for the Macmillan charity supporting patients and families suffering from the effects of cancer.
Earlier this year Gavin joined the group to congratulate Thelma Mattison who had joined the group aged 81 becoming the 1000th walker to sign up to South Staffordshire Health Watch Walks.
After their walk, Gavin said: “This is just one community group that does fantastic work bringing people together. I really enjoy coming to visit this group and join them on their wonderful walks around Great Wyrley. It’s a great way of encouraging people to get out and about and enjoy the sights of their local communities. I look forward to coming back again in the future.”
