Sir Gavin Williamson is working with authorities in Staffordshire to deliver 250 extra police officers for Staffordshire, as well as new technology to tackle car and van crime.
Sir Gavin met with Ben Adams, the Police, Crime, and Fire Commissioner for Staffordshire, to discuss plans that will tackle anti-social behaviour in Staffordshire. This follows concerns raised by many residents about drug use, irresponsible driving, and vandalism in the county, that Sir Gavin has been keen to take action on.
In particular, Sir Gavin was concerned about vehicle crime, which is a particular issue for people in Staffordshire. For example, there were 4,865 vehicle thefts across Staffordshire in 2020 alone.
Overall, there have been 20,768 reported cases of anti-social behaviour in Staffordshire, which can range from fly-tipping, large groups of loiterers, aggressive animals, and excessive noise.
Ben Adams said: “Good news Gavin, I’ve got the 250 extra officers I promised three years ago. They’re out in communities, in neighbourhoods. We’ve invested in number plate recognition. This is helping us to crack down on vehicle and van crime which I know is a particular issue in this part of the County. So it’s all about keeping people safe here in Great Wyrley.”
Sir Gavin said: “I share residents’ concerns about reports of anti-social and threatening behaviour. It is not right that any of us should feel unsafe in our homes or on our streets. I’ve been working with Ben to tackle antisocial behaviour and vehicle crime by increasing police presence on our streets. We’re really pleased to be able to deliver this, as it will make a really positive impact in terms of deterring trouble and protecting residents. It will enable the people of Staffordshire to feel safe, and that is the most important thing.”
