Sir Gavin Williamson visited Birmingham Airport to discuss plans for its low-carbon future and development.
Sir Gavin visited Birmingham Airport and met with Simon Evans, the Head of Corporate Affairs and Marketing, to discuss the airport’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2033. The measures being taken to reduce the airport’s carbon footprint include increasing the proportion of journeys made to and from the airport by public transport, adding plastic-free clauses into commercial contracts, and investigating opportunities for on-site energy generation.
The airport is the seventh largest in the UK and handled almost 10 million passengers in 2022. It sits at the heart of the UK Central Hub and the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA).
Sir Gavin said: “Thousands of residents from South Staffordshire fly from the airport to go on holiday, business trips, and to visit friends and family. I was delighted to learn about plans to extend flights to more popular destinations, as well as important efforts to reach carbon neutrality. It is vital that as we unleash the potential of the Midlands, we remain mindful of local communities and environmental concerns.”
