Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, attended Wombourne Carnival on Sunday, one year after its future looked bleak. This year’s return saw the carnival incorporate a ‘Wonderful World of Cinema’ theme with organisers encouraging visitors to dress up as their favourite movie character.
Record crowds descended on Wombourne for their revived Carnival which saw an estimated 7,000 visitors attend.
The carnival hosted a wide variety of stalls made up of independent traders, local businesses, community groups and local charities as well as lots of family entertainment including a funfair, bands, music groups, dance/drama groups, Women’s Institute event and new for 2015 – the Wombourne Village Quacky Races.
Gavin rode in a classic car as part of the parade which began at Wombourne Civic Centre and passed down Gravel Hill, Common Road, Giggetty Lane, Planks Lane, Church Road, High street and returning to Wombourne Civic Centre.
Commenting on the event Gavin said: “I am so pleased that Wombourne Carnival is now back in business. It was brilliant to see so many visitors lining the streets of Wombourne, despite the thunder shower, which didn’t dampen the community’s spirit. I really enjoyed taking part in the parade, especially riding in the classic car and seeing so many people having such a good time. A huge thank you must go to the organising committee who worked so hard to get the Carnival going so successfully once again and I look forward to attending for many more years in the future.”
