Concerned residents from Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay came together last night to launch a renewed effort against proposals to build on Greenbelt land by Landywood Lane.
The proposal to build over 140 houses on Greenbelt land has been heavily criticised by the Environment Agency and was thrown out by South Staffordshire District Council. Nevertheless, it has since gone to the Planning Inspectorate where it risks being passed.
Local MP Gavin Williamson has vowed to fight the development. Speaking at a recent public meeting, Gavin said: “These proposals will lead to the erosion of the distinct identity of our individual villages and could cause substantial environmental damage, as well as a potential risk of flooding”.
In support of local residents, Gavin Williamson has promised to present a petition to the House of Commons requesting that all possible steps are taken to protect the Greenbelt for future generations.
Last night saw over fifty concerned residents gather together at the Great Wyrley Community Centre to help prepare this petition. By the end of the evening eight thousand letters, petitions and displays cards had been stuffed into envelopes and prepared for distribution.
Throughout the next few weeks, each one will be hand delivered to every resident in Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay, asking for their support. This is an ongoing campaign and anyone wishing to volunteer is encouraged to get in touch with Gavin by emailing [email protected].
Commenting on the effort Gavin said: “It is truly inspiring to see the community come together like this to make a united fight against these ridiculous proposals which would result in the destruction of our green and pleasant land”.
