Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, visited Codsall High School last week to congratulate them on their recent exam results.
Gavin handed out certificates to pupils, in recognition of outstanding work and result of their GCSE exams and gave a short speech highlighting the importance of going the extra mile when caring for the community. He congratulated pupils on their contribution to the local area, especially the tea dances that they hold for the elderly, three times a year.
The Awards evening was also the final awards for the headmistress of the school Marjorie Tunnicliffe, who Gavin paid tribute to in his speech, who will retire at the end of the school year after 11 years in charge. Under her leadership the school has made the ‘outstanding’ Ofsted grade, dramatically improved GCSE grades and was ranked the number 1 school in the area in 2010 after being ranked 45th three years previously.
Gavin said: “I was delighted to be invited Codsall High School to hand out their GCSE certificates in recognition of the outstanding efforts made by students over the past academic year. I am always impressed by the high level of achievement gained by pupils and by the extreme dedication of the staff. I would like to thank pupils and staff for their wonderful reception and congratulate them all on the brilliant work they have done over the past year.
“I would also like to give a special mention to headmistress Marjorie Tunnicliffe who is retiring this year. She has done a fantastic job as headmistress over the past 11 years, bringing the school from a ‘satisfactory’ level to be rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted during her time at the school. She will be greatly missed by both pupils and members of staff.”
